How ceramic coating is applied to a car, step by step

A ceramic coating is only as good as the prep underneath it. Here's the process a professional shop follows.

What is ceramic coating?

A liquid layer that bonds to your paint's clear coat. It adds a slick, hydrophobic surface that resists water spots and everyday grime, and makes washing easier.

Step 1: Thorough wash

The car is washed with pH-neutral shampoo, using a two-bucket method and a soft mitt, then rinsed and dried completely.

Step 2: Decontamination

A cleaning spray breaks down embedded residue, and a clay bar removes what's left so the surface is smooth.

Step 3: Paint correction

Machine polishing removes swirl marks, fine scratches and dullness. Anything left in the paint gets sealed under the coating, so this step matters.

Step 4: Applying the coating

The coating goes on in a thin, even layer, one panel at a time, and the excess is wiped off after a short bonding time.

Step 5: Curing

The car stays dry and undisturbed while the coating bonds and hardens.

Step 6: Final inspection

Each panel is checked under controlled lighting for high spots or uneven areas, and fixed if found.

Step 7: Care afterward

• Wash regularly with pH-neutral products.
• Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive automatic washes.
• Dry with microfiber, and have the coating checked periodically.
